Property Tax Reform
As Maui's real estate market booms, fueled often by outside investors, kama'ainas & longtime residents have seen the assessed values of even modest homes in many areas skyrocket.
Since taxes are based in part on a property's assessed value, local families face the very real prospect of being "taxed" off of family lands.
This trend is already occurring in resort areas like Makena. Meanwhile, Hawai'i Island and Kaua'i are both taking action to offer relief to longtime property owners.
Maui County Council and administration need to review their options and act quickly to do the same.
